Om Zone with Harriet Harris

Om Zone, a voice for the Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico's yoga, meditation, and healing arts community, is dedicated to keeping our eclectic community up-to-date on ancient wisdoms and new trends. The show features music, spiritual readings, and interviews with many of our wonderful spiritual teachers, healers, and artists in Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico.

Harriet has a B.A. in English from The State University of New York Albany and began her M.A. in Educational Media at New York University. She moved here from Austin, Texas and brought Cultural Encounters, her educational and cultural travel company with her to Santa Fe.
In addition to her devotion to her yoga and meditation practices, she loves traveling because she gets to see the coolest things (she "digs" archaeology) and to meet the coolest people. She is a student of the world and travels extensively. She especially loves spending time in New York, Europe, the Mediterranean the Middle East, her home in Santa Fe, and , of course, in the vast reaches of her inner consciousness.

Fruit Tapioca Prep time: 10 minutes, plus a two hour soak in between. Or about 20 minutes, if you’ve forgotten to soak it. Serves 4 or more. Calms all doshas(tridoshic), sattvic.
Combine in a saucepan: 1 qt. of your favorite healthy organic bottled juice – blueberry, apricot, pineapple coconut, or cherry are all tasty ½ cup small or large pearl tapioca
Stir well, cover, let sit for two hours or more. When I have presence of mind, I do this before I go off to work for the day, and then finish it when I get home, early evening. Otherwise I just follow the recipe below, knowing it will take about twice as long to thicken.
Put the juice and tapioca on medium heat, bring to a boil, stirring, then reduce to low, continuing to stir every few minutes so that the sticky delicious tapioca balls do not glom on the bottom of the saucepan. When the pearlescent tapioca goes clear, and the pudding is thick, it’s done! You can garnish with fresh fruit, like strawberries or blueberries, or toasted coconut, or fresh whip cream.
Based on a recipe in Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners, Morningstar, Lotus Press, 1995. |

Yummy Pesto Prep time: 10 minutes. Serves 4. This is a very forgiving and fun recipe. You can use ground walnuts or sunflower seeds instead of the tahini, and a wide range of fresh garden herbs with the basil, or in place of it. In a blender, combine and blend until smooth: Then add: Blend again, until smooth. Ready to eat, on pasta, crackers, rice, polenta, what have you. Based on a recipe from The Ayurvedic Cookbook, Morningstar and Desai, Lotus Press, 1990. |
