Papaya Mask

Papaya Mask for exfoliation and smooth skin from Rowan Wolverton, skin care specialist at Body of Santa Fe. Papaya enzymes dissolve and exfoliate rough dry skin. The result is smoother skin with a finer texture. This is great for dehydrated, sun damaged and wrinkled skin.

Ingredients:

1 papaya
honey 1/2 teaspoon
Bergamot essential oil, 3 drops

Directions:

Mash the papaya to a smooth consistency and mix in the other ingredients.
Apply to face and neck leave on for 15-20 minutes.
Rinse with a cool water.

Fruit Tapioca

Prep time: 10 minutes, plus a two hour soak in between. Or about 20 minutes, if you’ve forgotten to soak it.

Serves 4 or more. Calms all doshas(tridoshic), sattvic.

Combine in a saucepan:

1 qt. of your favorite healthy organic bottled juice – blueberry, apricot, pineapple coconut, or cherry are all tasty

½ cup small or large pearl tapioca

Stir well, cover, let sit for two hours or more. When I have presence of mind, I do this before I go off to work for the day, and then finish it when I get home, early evening. Otherwise I just follow the recipe below, knowing it will take about twice as long to thicken.

Put the juice and tapioca on medium heat, bring to a boil, stirring, then reduce to low, continuing to stir every few minutes so that the sticky delicious tapioca balls do not glom on the bottom of the saucepan. When the pearlescent tapioca goes clear, and the pudding is thick, it’s done! You can garnish with fresh fruit, like strawberries or blueberries, or toasted coconut, or fresh whip cream.

Based on a recipe in Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners, Morningstar, Lotus Press, 1995.

Yummy Pesto

Prep time: 10 minutes.

Serves 4.
Calms all doshas (tridoshic), unless you add the garlic. Then, heating for Pitta, calming for Vata and Kapha.

This is a very forgiving and fun recipe. You can use ground walnuts or sunflower seeds instead of the tahini, and a wide range of fresh garden herbs with the basil, or in place of it.

In a blender, combine and blend until smooth:
1 cup lightly packed fresh organic basil
½ cup or more fresh parsley
2 Tablespoons olive oil
3 Tablespoons water

Then add:
1 – 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced (omit for Pitta)
1 Tablespoon mellow white miso (if you’re on a low sodium diet, you can sneak by with as little as 1 teaspoon here)
2 Tablespoons sesame tahini

Blend again, until smooth. Ready to eat, on pasta, crackers, rice, polenta, what have you.

Based on a recipe from The Ayurvedic Cookbook, Morningstar and Desai, Lotus Press, 1990.

Here is a great Green Goddess recipe. Serves 1

The Green Goddess

2 handfuls of baby spinach
2 handfuls of sunflower sprouts
8 stalks of celery
1/4 bunch of parsley
1/2 cucumber
1 1/2 apples
You may add lemon juice, ginger juice, cayenne, and/or crystal salt to taste.
Serves 1

Here is a nice Dahl recipe. Serves 4 to 6

1 cup of red lentils (rinsed) to 7 cups of water. Cook 45 mins to 1 hour. As lentils cook skim the foam off of the top. Cook on medium simmer.
The red lentils will mostly dissolve when cooked.

while the lentils are cooking:
Sauté in Olive oil, or ghee. (Note: I sauté each ingredient for about a minute before I add the next one)

1 small  Jalapeno chopped (no seeds)
1/2 inch ginger root  ( peeled and chopped)
2 cloves garlic ( chopped)
1/2 small white onion ( Chopped) or 1/4 large white onion
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp curry powder
once this is finished, set aside.

When red lentils are cooked stir in  two medium sized carrots( diced), cook for 15 more minutes. Then stir in  the sautéed mixture cook 10 more minutes. Then stir in one peeled chopped tomato cook about 7 mins. Then stir in  1/2 bunch chopped spinach, cook 3 mins, then stir in  2 small tsp salt, juice of 1/2 small lemon and a little bit of chopped cilantro.      ( the consistency of Dahl should be stew consistency, not mushy) if too mushy add about 1/2 cup hot water. Adjust salt to taste

You can serve this over any grain or pasta

I hope you enjoy,
Many blessings,

Sandy
